Shadow Pond Journal Issue VII Cover Reveal

I have chosen the above image for Issue VII theme : interiors / landscape - a moment in nature that reflects your inner world- as I feel a fan particularly in traditional Japanese culture offers hints of hidden meaning.

In Kabuki , the theatrical expressions are vivid, dramatic, and expressive; and the fan follows suit.

A single folding fan ( sensu ) can become

. a letter
. a cup of sake
. a weapon
. rain or snow

Nothing changes physically; only gesture and intention. The audience is trained to see beyond the object.

In many Noh plays, the fan is the sole object the actor holds.

It can represent:

. the moon
. a mirror
. a door
. a spirit presence
. even absence itself

Because the stage is nearly bare, the fan carries entire worlds within it.

Food for thought to help inspire you to think outside the box and come up with 3 high quality haiku, duostich, monostitch or senryū - together with a brief bio if you haven't been published in SPJ before.

Submissions open : May 10 - June 10

I'm looking forward to reading your work.

Best wishes
